Sgt. Aponti in the new A/227 mess hall. Too bad we could not have stayed a little longer to make use of it.

Leaving Phan Thiet352 viewsJim Gray Photo
Mid January 1968, Co. A 227th AHB has been ordered to join the rest of the Division at LZ English. Jay Dirnberger can be seen in what remains of one of the Pilots' tents as the Company area is broken down for the move north.. Mike Lane sits on the sand bag perimeter of the tent while Roland Haight carries a lounge chair from his hootch that was located behind the F.T.A. sign.

Cowboy Dave Armstrong351 viewsJohn LaDue Photo
This photo shows 1st Plt., D/227th Crew Chief, "Cowboy" Dave Armstrong. Sometimes Dave took the Cavalry thing a little too literally. :-) There was a herd of free ranging cattle in the Le Hong Phong forest, north of Phan Thiet. I believe we had some discussions about, whether or not one of these scrawny cows would taste better than the "Mystery Meat" served in the Mess tent. We figured that these cows would be about as chewy as an old Flak Jacket, so it was a toss up. :-)

Spectator Sport Cricket Fight351 viewsJim Puhala Photo
The kids would stage cricket fights. They’d get a couple of crickets, rile them up by jabbing them with twigs and let them go after each other.
This photo was taken at Song Mau. We spent a lot of time there - waiting. We’d put out a recon patrol in the morning. They’d recon for a while; if they didn’t find anything, we’d pick them up and put them someplace else. If they did find something, we’d do a CA.
